This week we are on the subject of the pure in heart and Scripture is filled with explanations of the difference between pure and impure thoughts and actions. Worship is an act that is pleasing to God when it is given to Him. The truth of it all is this, only God can save us from eternal damnation. No human nor man-made idol can do that. After all, God is the creator and we are just manipulators and designers that use the materials that God provides.

What profit is an idol when its maker has shaped it, a metal image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in his own creation when he makes speechless idols! Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake; to a silent stone, Arise! Can this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it. But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.”  Habakkuk 2:18-20

There are many things in this world today that beg to be loved. People, material objects, symbols, celestial bodies, fantastical/otherworldly creatures, comic superheroes, nature, animals, even foods have been worshipped as long as man has roamed the earth. Each thing does have a significance in itself some of which are man-made and some just appear out of nowhere. Some make us feel better and some help us get through one small period but Nothing,  I say again, Nothing gets us through everyday except the One who created everything and all of us.

People who worship people will be disappointed to find out their idol is less desirable than originally thought. Humans are flawed creatures with flawed ways. There was only one perfect human ever to walk this earth and He is known in English as Jesus. He is the only one who was perfect in the eyes of God. It is because He is a part of God made flesh. He is the Word which God spoke in creation of everything. His tongue spoke only the truth of God the way it was meant to be spoken and heard. But, He is not to be worshiped. In fact, He commanded worship of the Father, God of whom He Himself worshiped, prayed to, gave His very existence credit to.

Take a look at the world today and you will see that the one thing that makes the world go round is literally just ink made from plants, that is mechanically placed on a flat surface made from trees and passed from person to person. The round, easily carried version is just pressed metal. To be made, it takes the transfer of the same from one hand to another.

How did we becomes slaves to something we fabricate? This inanimate object has been instrumental in the downfall of many men and the desire for it has controlled the fate of many a person. It is a necessary evil for survival in today’s world because we no longer barter or trade without some form of currency. It is involved in the transfer of land, puts food on the table, sends children to school, provides the ability to have material things. Much anarchy and destruction would occur without it.

There really is nothing we can do except accept it for now until Jesus returns. Accepting it as a necessary function of physical survival does not make it into a desirable must have thing that we are required to worship, it will not get us in to heaven. People cannot get other people into paradise either. Do not idolize another because they are popular or do things you wish you could do, they are trapped and enslaved just like you. Sometimes worse.

What can we do?? Trust God. Do not be like the Israelites in the mountains of Ararat who created a golden calf, putting your trust in something your own hands made. Rather, put your faith and trust in the Father. He loves you and can physically and spiritually show it, find me one inanimate object that can do that. Love one another just as He loves us and your days will be great.

In God’s Arms filled with Grace, Mercy, and Love,

Rob, a servant of God
