Never before has there been a time that is worse than today. Readers of Scripture may challenge that by saying that the time of Noah was pretty bad, in fact, God started over. Well, Satan has so many more tools to use against God now that did not exist back then. The distractions make temptation so much easier that the fruits of the Spirit have begun to rot from lack of nourishing even the most devout. Now that I have your attention. Truth be told, we need to give up everything and give everything over to God. All over the world people are living two different types of lives, the haves and the have nots. But let me change the outlook and meaning of those terms. The haves are those who are nourished by the Fruits of the Spirit and the have nots are living in the world. There are more that do not have than those that do. Now some may say that sounds just like the standard understanding of rich and poor and I am here to tell you how right you are. Society today is so secular and involved with self-gratification that it has infiltrated religious thinking and with that our personal relationship with the Father has suffered.

When Paul wrote to Galatia, he warned them of the dangers of the flesh and how staying in worldly things would separate them from Christ. These desires are unhealthy no matter how much society and science say they are ok. Let us see what Paul says in this section of his letter.

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.  Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:16-23

Mentally, the desires of the flesh corrode the capacity for clear and moral thinking. These behaviors are brought on by greed, lust, ethnic tensions, jealousy, basically anything that is considered impure thoughts and worldly desires that the devil says are good. These behaviors are not natural and go against all things good and holy. In truth they are perversions, exact opposites of the Fruit of the Spirit. The Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

For the next nine Sundays we will study each one of the fruits contained in this cornucopia of nutritious nourishment to our souls and discuss how we can change the opposing worldview that causes us to stumble. I hope that this study helps strengthen you while dealing with the pressures of society through concentrating on Scripture and staying in the Word. God Bless and May Jesus lift you up.

Rob, Servant of God
