Have you ever looked at a person of the opposite sex and thought the person was beautiful but when you approached the individual you found a hard or ill willed heart? As human, we have a tendency to judge by outward appearance alone. The physical first impression leads to whether or not a person will talk to another. Society has put an idea into the masses mind that having certain looks makes a person desirable but that is far from the truth of the matter.
The truth of the person is not what is in the flesh but in the heart. When Samuel was given the go ahead from God to seek a new king he first judged on looks but God corrects him right away. It is written:
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
Jesse’s sons were handsome men and Samuel thought that outward appearance was key. The older sons of Jesse were rugged yet of good appearance. In the verse above we hear the wisdom of God stating one thing that resonates throughout the entire Bible, it is what is in the heart that matters. David was known as a man after God’s own heart. How is that possible? David had a kind and gentle spirit that was put to the test in his youth. He relied on God for all things and his total person showed the characteristics and values of a man of God. Yes he knew fear but God’s strength was in him as he protected his sheep.
Looking at the heart
There are so many people in the world and so many different appearances in the flesh. Society has dictated how to see a person based on looks and many have fallen into that trap only to find disappointment. When we look in magazines or the internet we see someone’s opinion about outward beauty. This opinion suddenly can become a real stressor in a young mind when a person suddenly feels ugly even though his/her outward appearance is seen as beautiful in someone’s eyes.
What we need to express as God’s Children is that beauty comes from the heart. The person with a good heart can be ugly by human outward appearance standards but found to be the most beautiful person in the world. True beauty is inside us. The media can show people that we find attractive at first glance all they want but if the heart of God is not there, the outward appearance means nothing.
Yoda from the Star Wars franchise gave Luke Skywalker an important lesson while training him. He said, Judge me by my size do you?” and then proceeded to lift a very heavy object with the power of the force. The lesson for us, do not judge a person by outward appearance, the smallest creature who has belief in a higher power can have the strength to move mountains (problems, stressors, temptations) and not let the barriers get in their way. So why do we judge?
What matters is what is in the heart. How is your heart? When you look in the mirror who do you see? Do you see your ugliness from sin or do you see the Child of God?
